Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has stated that President Julius Maada Bio does not have the constitutional authority to remove the Chief Electoral Commissioner (ECSL), Edmond Sylvester Alpha, from office.
Mr. Sesay made the remarks while addressing journalists in response to calls from the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) for the removal of the electoral body’s head.
According to the Attorney General, the position of Chief Electoral Commissioner is protected under the Constitution, with clearly defined procedures governing appointment and removal. He explained that such offices are safeguarded to ensure independence and prevent undue political interference in the country’s electoral processes.
He emphasised that any action to remove the Chief Electoral Commissioner must strictly follow constitutional provisions, noting that the President does not have unilateral powers to dismiss the office holder.
The statement comes amid ongoing political tensions, with the APC raising concerns over the leadership of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), particularly in relation to the conduct of future elections. The opposition has maintained that changes in the Commission’s leadership are necessary to restore public confidence.
However, the government, through the Attorney General’s office, maintains that adherence to constitutional procedures is paramount in safeguarding democratic institutions and the rule of law.
Political observers say the development highlights the growing debate over electoral governance in Sierra Leone, as stakeholders continue to push for reforms and dialogue ahead of the 2028 general elections.
