The Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), Professor Ezekiel Kalvin Duramany-Lakkoh, has called on young entrepreneurs across the Mano River Union (MRU) region to focus on capacity development, innovation, and financial literacy, arguing that these are often more important than access to finance in building successful businesses.

Professor Duramany-Lakkoh made the remarks while delivering a keynote presentation on “Financing Entrepreneurship” at the Mano River Youth KonnektSummit 2026, which brought together youth leaders, entrepreneurs, and development advocates from Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Addressing participants, the academic highlighted the growing influence of private investment and entrepreneurship in driving global economic development. He challenged young people to rethink their approach to business financing, noting that while access to capital remains important, the ability to effectively manage resources and create innovative solutions is equally critical.

Drawing comparisons between the wealth of some of the world’s leading entrepreneurs and the economies of entire regions, Professor Duramany-Lakkohemphasized the transformative power of innovation and enterprise. He noted that individuals such as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have accumulated wealth through entrepreneurship and technological innovation, demonstrating the immense value of creating solutions that address societal needs.

He further observed that despite West Africa’s vast natural resources and export potential, many countries in the region continue to depend heavily on external development assistance. According to him, this reality underscores the need for stronger investments in human capital, entrepreneurial skills, and business development.

As part of his presentation, Professor Duramany-Lakkoh outlined ten key considerations for young entrepreneurs seeking access to finance. These included having a clear purpose for funding, developing a sound business plan, understanding different financing options, maintaining accurate financial records, building a positive credit history, understanding borrowing costs, preparing the necessary documentation, improving financial literacy, exploring youth-focused funding programmes, and building strong professional networks.

He stressed that financial institutions and investors are more likely to support entrepreneurs who demonstrate credibility, preparedness, and a clear understanding of their business objectives.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor also encouraged young people to take advantage of funding opportunities provided by governments, development agencies, and financial institutions while continuously investing in their own personal and professional development.

Participants at the summit described the presentation as insightful and practical, noting that it provided valuable guidance on overcoming barriers to entrepreneurship and accessing finance in a competitive economic environment.

The Mano River Youth Konnekt Summit serves as a regional platform for dialogue, collaboration, and empowerment, bringing together young leaders from the four Mano River Union countries to discuss solutions to shared socio-economic challenges and promote youth-led development initiatives.
