Prof Xia, 55 years old, the oldest member in the Ebola virus detection and surveillance team, but he still works as active as his young colleagues. The BSL-3 laboratory system is very complex and highly technical.
In order to keeps the laboratory running very well, the Ebola suspected samples as well as other high pathogenic agents detection, Prof Xia insists on going to work even when he is sick or at the weekends or holidays.
Besides laboratory maintenance work, Prof Xia also teaches biosafety laboratory maintenance knowledge to both Chinese and local staff so as to improve their capability of running such kind of high level lab especially to the local staff who will run the laboratory in the future.
With his guidance, the staff has solved several problems of the lab which ensure the lab runs smoothly, particularly guaranteed the safety of the staff working in the lab during detection.
“It is amazing experience working with the young scientists in Sierra Leone-China friendship biosafety laboratory, and I am very glad to be good friends of the local staff after working with them for the past 6 months and witness the progress they are making. I do hope what I have done in Sierra Leone can be useful to the country’s public health” Prof Xia said.
