The newly appointed Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has appeared before the Committee on Appointments and Public Service in Parliament, where he articulated a reform-driven vision anchored on professionalism, accountability, and institutional renewal.
During his appearance at the House of Parliament, Mr. Alpha underscored his commitment to leading the Commission with integrity, transparency, and strict adherence to international best practices. He stressed that restoring and strengthening public confidence in Sierra Leone’s electoral system would remain a central priority under his tenure.
Mr. Alpha highlighted his more than 20 years of service within the Electoral Commission, noting that his long-standing institutional experience has provided him with deep insight into the operational, administrative, and technical dimensions of election management in the country. In addition, he referenced his decade-long academic career at Njala University, which he said has enriched his analytical and policy-oriented approach to governance.
According to the Chairman nominee, the combination of hands-on electoral management and scholarly expertise uniquely positions him to implement meaningful reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and credibility within the Commission.
He further pledged to introduce innovative strategies to modernise electoral processes, enhance stakeholder engagement, and ensure that the Commission operates as an independent and trusted institution in line with democratic principles.
Members of the Committee are expected to deliberate on his nomination before presenting their recommendations to the full House for consideration.
Mr. Alpha’s appearance comes at a time of heightened national discussion surrounding electoral governance, making his proposed reform agenda a subject of keen public interest.
