Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, has underscored Sierra Leone’s growing prominence within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), attributing the country’s enhanced regional standing to the leadership of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, who currently serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
Speaking ahead of the forthcoming ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit, Minister Kabba said President Bio’s leadership has strengthened regional cooperation and reinforced Sierra Leone’s role in promoting peace, democratic governance and constitutional order across West Africa.
He noted that while ECOWAS was established primarily to foster economic integration, the regional bloc has expanded its focus to address emerging security challenges, including terrorism, political instability and unconstitutional changes of government.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, peace and security remain essential pillars for sustainable development and regional integration, adding that President Bio has played a pivotal role in advancing dialogue and collective action aimed at preserving stability within the sub-region.
Minister Kabba expressed optimism that the upcoming statutory meetings involving ECOWAS ambassadors, ministers and Heads of State would further strengthen cooperation and advance the organisation’s objectives of regional peace, security and economic integration.
Meanwhile, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Barlay, said preparations for the summit have brought together government institutions, development partners, private sector actors and local communities in a coordinated effort to ensure the successful hosting of the regional event.
She explained that development partners have aligned their support with President Bio’s four strategic priorities for ECOWAS: restoring constitutional order, strengthening regional security, deepening economic integration and advancing institutional reforms.
Barlay disclosed that Sierra Leone will also host the West African Integration Summit later this year, describing it as another milestone in the country’s efforts to deepen regional cooperation and promote sustainable development.
She noted that ongoing institutional reforms under the Compact for the Future are expected to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of ECOWAS while enhancing the organisation’s capacity to respond to emerging regional challenges.
Beyond its diplomatic significance, the Planning Minister said the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit is expected to generate substantial economic opportunities for Sierra Leone.
She explained that increased demand for accommodation, transportation, catering, tourism and other services will create business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, adding that ECOWAS has encouraged delegates to patronise locally owned hotels to maximise economic benefits for Sierra Leoneans.
Minister Kabba described Sierra Leone’s hosting of the summit as a defining moment in the country’s diplomatic history and a clear demonstration of the confidence ECOWAS member states have in Sierra Leone’s stability, leadership and capacity to host major international events.
He recalled that Sierra Leone has remained a committed member of ECOWAS since the organisation’s establishment in 1975, contributing to regional peacebuilding, democratic governance and economic cooperation.
The Foreign Affairs Minister concluded that the summit will not only strengthen collaboration among ECOWAS member states but also showcase Sierra Leone’s progress, resilience and growing influence as a trusted regional partner committed to advancing peace, security and economic prosperity across West Africa.
