A new initiative aimed at empowering women and young girls has been launched in Sierra Leone, as ace journalist and entertainment host, Marina Terry,officially unveiled Rina’s EmpowerHer Foundation.
The Foundation, spearheaded by the renowned journalist and entertainment host, seeks to provide support systems, safe spaces, and opportunities for women and girls to rebuild their lives, develop their potential, and regain control over their futures.
Speaking at the launch, Madam Terry described the initiative as a long-held vision driven by her passion to make a meaningful impact in society. She explained that her experiences, particularly during a fellowship programme where she worked closely with young women in slum and marginalised communities, inspired her to take concrete action.
According to her, many of the women she encountered faced significant challenges, including poverty, substance abuse, mental health struggles, and limited access to opportunities. These realities, she said, highlighted the urgent need for structured and sustained interventions.
“Rina’s EmpowerHer Foundation is built on the purpose to support, uplift, and create safe spaces for women and young girls to rebuild, grow, and take back control of their lives,” she stated.
The foundation aims to implement programmes focused on mentorship, personal development, and community support, targeting vulnerable groups across the country. It also seeks to foster an environment where women and girls can heal, gain confidence, and pursue opportunities for self-reliance.
Madam Terry called on individuals, organisations, and the wider community to support the initiative, noting that collective effort will be essential to achieving its goals.
Observers say the launch of Rina’s EmpowerHerFoundation reflects growing momentum in Sierra Leone’s civil society space to address gender inequality and promote inclusive development, particularly for women and girls facing socio-economic challenges.
