Residents of Sanda Magbolontor chiefdom in Karene district have expressed growing concern over the prolonged suspension of ferry services, warning that the disruption is severely affecting transportation, trade, and livelihoods across the area.
The ferry, which serves as a critical transport link connecting the chiefdom to neighboring communities and commercial centers, has reportedly been out of operation for several weeks, resulting in significant challenges for residents and businesses.
Community members say the absence of the ferry has led to a sharp increase in transportation costs, with fares rising substantially as commuters and traders seek alternative means of travel. The increased transport expenses have, in turn, contributed to higher prices for food and other essential commodities.
Farmers in the chiefdom have reported difficulties transporting agricultural produce to markets, raising concerns about potential losses and reduced incomes. Traders have also complained of escalating operational costs, which they say are being passed on to consumers through higher prices.

They argue that restoring the ferry would significantly reduce transportation costs, improve the movement of goods and people, stabilize market prices, and support economic activities throughout the chiefdom and surrounding communities.
Residents further noted that reliable ferry services are essential for ensuring access to schools, healthcare facilities, and other basic services, particularly for people living in remote areas.
Local stakeholders have called for swift action to prevent further disruptions to commerce and social services, emphasizing that the ferry remains a lifeline for thousands of people in Sanda Magbolontor and neighboring communities.
They expressed hope that the relevant authorities will prioritize the issue and take immediate steps to return the ferry to operation, thereby easing the burden on residents and helping to revive economic activity in the district.
