Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, David Moinina Sengeh, has held discussions with internationally acclaimed actor and entrepreneur Idris Elba, fashion designer Foday Dumbuya, and business executive Zoisa North-Bond on advancing development initiatives and investment opportunities in Sierra Leone.
The meeting focused on innovative partnerships and financing mechanisms aimed at accelerating the country’s economic growth and sustainable development agenda.
A key topic of discussion was the ongoing collaboration between Idris Elba and Zoisa North-Bond to develop a large-scale solar, wind, and battery-powered energy system on Sherbro Island. The renewable energy project is expected to provide approximately one megawatt of electricity, with plans to connect nearly 2,000 homes and businesses upon completion.
Beyond expanding access to clean energy, the project is also expected to generate valuable data for research and support the development of new technologies in renewable energy systems.
The initiative is being implemented as a fully funded private-sector investment involving Idris Elba’s company and Octopus Energy. However, government support has played a significant role in facilitating the project, with backing from President Julius Maada Bio and relevant institutions, including the ministries responsible for energy and environmental affairs, as well as regulatory agencies.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Sengeh noted that he remains in close contact with both Idris Elba and Zoisa North-Bond as work continues on what he described as a pioneering renewable energy project for the sub-region.
The Chief Minister also revealed that renowned fashion designer Foday Dumbuya later joined the meeting after completing filming activities related to the victory celebrations of Arsenal F.C. In a light-hearted exchange, Dr. Sengeh jokingly credited Dumbuya’s design influence for the club’s success, with Idris Elba reportedly praising the style and creativity incorporated into the team’s apparel.
The engagement underscores Sierra Leone’s growing efforts to attract international investment, promote renewable energy, and strengthen partnerships with global figures committed to supporting the country’s development.
