The official opening of the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games was finally held on Friday 23rd July, 2021 at the Olympic Complex in Tokyo, the city of Japan.

Sierra Leone’s National Flag; the Green, White and Blue was caught flying high among the 204 countries that are participating in these Games.

Sports Minister Ibrahim Nyelenkeh together with the NSA boss Dr. Kenneth Brima who witnessed the ceremony from the VIP stand together with other dignitaries expressed government delight for the country’s representation at the world biggest sports outing.

Minister Nyelenkeh emphasised on the New Direction Government continues support towards sports development in the country, stressing that President Bio has supported sports more than any government in the country’s history.

“This is the first time Sierra Leone is represented at the Olympic Games with up to five different sporting disciplines, and with more athletes as well, and this is an indication that sports has a future in the country”, Dr. Brima.

Meanwhile, Chef De Mission at the NOC-SL, Unisa Deen Kargbo has confirmed that Sierra Leone has been invited to complete in the Trampolin event at the games. According to UDK, modalities are now been worked out for the athlete to travel to Tokyo.

In another development, another set of delegation have arrived at the Games Village last night and they are all been accommodated with the athletes in high spirits for their respective events.

Meanwhile, below are the schedules for Team Sierra Leone:

July 27-Judo 81kg men Fredrick Haris against MuradFatiyev of Azerbaijan;

30 July- Swimming men and women freestyle and Athletics 100m women.
