The Government of Sierra Leone has honoured British military leader, Field Marshal Lord David Richards, with the country’s highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel, in recognition of his role in supporting efforts to restore peace during Sierra Leone’s civil war.
The award was conferred by the Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, acting on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Jallohdescribed the honour as a reflection of the nation’s enduring gratitude for Field Marshal Richards’ leadership during a critical period in Sierra Leone’s history.
“Today, on behalf of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, I had the honour of bestowing the Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel, Sierra Leone’s highest national honour, on Field Marshal David Richards,” he said. “This recognition reflects the enduring gratitude of the people of Sierra Leone for his leadership during a defining chapter in our journey toward peace and recovery.”
He noted that Field Marshal Richards played a significant role during the 2000 security crisis, when British military intervention helped stabilize the country and supported the peace process that eventually ended the civil war.
Field Marshal Lord David Richards, a member of the United Kingdom House of Lords and former Chief of the Defence Staff (2010–2013), has had a distinguished military career, serving in key command positions in Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and East Timor.
The Government of Sierra Leone said the honour underscores the historic ties between the two countries and recognises contributions made toward peacebuilding, stability, and national recovery.
