President Julius Maada Bio arrived in Accra over the weekend for a brief diplomatic visit to meet with John Dramani Mahama, following the recent catastrophic floods that have claimed dozens of lives and displaced thousands across Ghana.
The visit comes after days of torrential rainfall triggered widespread flooding in several parts of the country, particularly in Accra and surrounding regions. The disaster submerged homes, businesses and major roads, disrupted transportation, and forced tens of thousands of people to flee their communities.
Ghanaian authorities have reported at least 34 deaths nationwide, with nearly 90,000 people displaced as emergency response and recovery operations continue.
During the meeting, President Bio personally conveyed Sierra Leone’s condolences and solidarity to the Government and people of Ghana.
“Today in Accra, I met with President John DramaniMahama to personally convey the deepest sympathies of the Government and people of Sierra Leone to our brothers and sisters in Ghana,” President Bio said.
“The torrential rains and severe flooding have brought heartbreaking devastation, and our thoughts are with every family affected. Sierra Leone stands firmly with the people of Ghana during this difficult moment.”
President Bio’s visit underscores the strong bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and Ghana and reflects the spirit of regional solidarity in times of humanitarian crisis. It also highlights Sierra Leone’s commitment to standing with neighbouring countries as they respond to natural disasters and work towards recovery.
Ghana has since launched a nationwide clean-up and restoration campaign, with the military, emergency services and disaster management agencies deployed to support rescue efforts, restore damaged infrastructure and assist affected communities.
