Sierra Leone has secured more than US$243 million in fresh financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) following the successful completion of the third review of the country’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

Minister of Finance, Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, said the approved package comprises US$31.72 million under the ECF arrangement to support ongoing economic reforms and US$211.45 million under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), aimed at strengthening climate resilience and promoting sustainable development.

He said it is also a significant endorsement of Sierra Leone’s economic reform agenda and reflects growing confidence among international financial institutions in the country’s fiscal management and macroeconomic policies.

He attributed the achievement to the economic recovery measures and fiscal reforms implemented under the leadership of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.

In recent years, Sierra Leone has undertaken a series of policy reforms focused on stabilizing the economy, improving public financial management, and strengthening economic resilience. These efforts have contributed to greater exchange rate stability, reduced inflationary pressures, lower borrowing costs, and increased confidence among development partners and investors.

The IMF support is expected to provide additional resources to sustain the country’s reform programme while supporting key national development priorities. Government officials say the funding will complement efforts to advance flagship initiatives such as Feed Salone, human capital development, infrastructure expansion, climate adaptation, and inclusive economic growth.

Economic analysts have described the latest IMF approval as an important milestone in Sierra Leone’s recovery journey, noting that it not only unlocks critical financial resources but also reinforces the country’s credibility in the international financial community.

The Government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline, implementing structural reforms, and pursuing policies aimed at ensuring long-term economic stability and sustainable development.

The latest IMF support is expected to further strengthen Sierra Leone’s efforts to build a resilient economy capable of creating opportunities, improving livelihoods, and supporting national development objectives in the years ahead.
