The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the National Tourist Board (NTB), Tourism is Life, and Air Sierra Leone, has updated the media on Sierra Leone’s remarkable participation at the just-concluded 21st AKWAABA Tourism and Travel Fair held from 14–16 September 2025 in Lagos, Nigeria. The international fair, recognised as West Africa’s largest tourism gathering, brought together industry leaders, investors, and stakeholders to promote Africa’s travel and hospitality sector.
Sierra Leone emerged as a star attraction, with two major awards underscoring the country’s growing influence in the tourism landscape. The Honourable Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, was crowned Best Minister of Tourism in Africa 2024–2025, a prestigious recognition of her visionary leadership and tireless efforts in repositioning Sierra Leone as a top travel destination. In addition, the General Manager of NTB, Madam Fatmata Mida Carew, was celebrated among the Top 100 Travel and Tourism Personalities in Africa, affirming her role in championing tourism growth and innovation.
Speaking to the press, National Tourist Board General Manager, Madam Fatmata Mida Carew highlighted the importance of Sierra Leone’s participation in such global fairs, noting that AKWAABA provides a platform where Africans meet to showcase their touristic attractions. She emphasised the benefits gained, including networking opportunities, building partnerships, and increasing international visibility for Sierra Leone’s tourism offerings.
In her remarks, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, described tourism as a vital sector providing unique opportunities for national development, job creation, and cultural preservation. She dedicated her award to the Government and people of Sierra Leone, stressing that it was a collective achievement made possible through teamwork and consistent investment in the sector.
The recognition at AKWAABA has not only elevated Sierra Leone’s profile but also reinforced the country’s commitment to driving sustainable tourism as a pillar of economic growth.
