Sierra Leone has taken a major step toward transforming its coffee sector by signing a partnership agreement with the African Coffee Hub during the Regional Forum on Coffee Value Chain Development held in Marrakech.
The forum, co-organized by the Islamic Development Bank, the Government of Morocco, the African Coffee Hub, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, brought together key stakeholders to promote investment and strengthen Africa’s coffee value chains.
Sierra Leone’s delegation was led by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Henry Musa Kpaka, alongside Deputy Finance Minister Kadiatu Allie. Both officials highlighted strategies to improve production, expand market access, and increase value addition within the country’s coffee industry.
At the forum, Minister Kpaka spotlighted Stenophylla, a unique coffee species native to Sierra Leone, noted for its high quality and resilience to warmer climates, positioning it as a strategic asset in the face of global climate challenges.
A key outcome of the engagement was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Agriculture and the African Coffee Hub. The agreement focuses on technical cooperation in areas such as post-harvest handling, quality control, traceability, branding, logistics, and investment development.
The partnership is expected to enhance Sierra Leone’s ability to move beyond raw coffee exports toward a more competitive, value-driven industry, boosting farmer incomes, creating jobs, and attracting investment into the agricultural sector.
