The Ministry of Transport and Aviation, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), and the Sierra Leone National Shipping Agency (SLNSA), is proud to announce the hosting of the 34th Session of the Board of Governors Meeting of the Regional Maritime University (RMU).

The high-level meeting will take place from November 3rd to 6th, 2025, at the prestigious Bintumani Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown. This year’s session brings together maritime leaders, policymakers, and regional stakeholders to strengthen the University’s governance framework and enhance its role in advancing maritime education and training across West and Central Africa.

The RMU, headquartered in Accra, Ghana, serves as a centerof excellence for maritime education, safety, and capacity-building in the region. The upcoming Board of Governors meeting will focus on improving monitoring, supervision, and the overall functional operations of the University, ensuring that RMU continues to produce skilled professionals who meet global maritime standards.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Transport and Aviation, who currently serves as Chancellor of the University, will preside over the session. His leadership underscores Sierra Leone’s growing role in regional maritime development and cooperation.

This year’s meeting marks a significant milestone for the RMU, as Guinea-Bissau officially joins the bloc, becoming the newest member state alongside Sierra Leone, Ghana, Liberia, Cameroon, and The Gambia. The inclusion of Guinea-Bissau reflects the University’s expanding influence and commitment to inclusive regional collaboration.

Speaking ahead of the event, officials emphasised the importance of regional partnerships in promoting safe, efficient, and sustainable maritime transport. The meeting is expected to produce actionable resolutions to strengthen RMU’s institutional capacity and align its programs with the evolving needs of the global maritime industry.

The 34th Session of the RMU Board of Governors is set to reinforce the University’s vision of being a leading maritime education institution in Africa and a key driver of the region’s blue economy.
