Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its longstanding support for ending the United States’ economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba, joining the overwhelming majority of United Nations member states in voting in favour of the annual resolution calling for the embargo’s removal.
Speaking at the United Nations, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Permanent Representative for Political Affairs, KaliluIbrahim Totangi, said Sierra Leone and Cuba continue to enjoy strong bilateral relations built on decades of cooperation and mutual support.
He highlighted Cuba’s significant contributions to Sierra Leone, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education, noting that Cuban medical professionals have played a vital role in strengthening the country’s health sector.
Totangi also underscored Sierra Leone’s appreciation for Cuba’s assistance during the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, describing the support as a demonstration of the enduring friendship between the two nations.
Sierra Leone has consistently aligned with the overwhelming international majority, often more than 180 countries, supporting the UN resolution that calls for an end to the decades-long U.S. embargo on Cuba. The country maintains that dialogue, cooperation, and respect for international law remain essential to fostering global peace and development.
