The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has announced the launch of its Golden Jubilee National Media Awards 2021 to honour and recognise excellence in the media in Sierra Leone.

The Awards will identify and pay tribute to outstanding newspaper articles, radio reports, television broadcasts and online contributions that have helped to shape the development and progress of the media during 2019-2020, and a couple of months into 2021.

The Media Awards symbolises a move towards media self-regulation and serves as motivation towards increased professionalism in journalism in Sierra Leone.

It will recognise outstanding journalism, professional journalists and media institutions that have contributed to national development and the media landscape in Sierra Leone.

The SLAJ Golden Jubilee National Media Awards 2021 will be presented at the Black Tie Dinner event at the SLAJ Annual General Meeting in June 2021.

The Award categories include the Sam Metzger Award for Best Political Report, Best Report on Gender Issues, Best Economic Report, Best Report on the Courts, Best Health Report (COVID-19), Best Report on Arts, Culture and Tourism, Best Sports Report, OluAwoonor Gordon Award for Best Investigative Report, Best Report on the Environment, Best Report on Human Rights, Best Report on Agriculture, Best Report on Education, Best Feature Story and Best Report on Corruption.

The SLAJ Awards is open to all registered, practicing and paid-up members of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and all entries will be cross-referenced with an up-to-date list of SLAJ members. Applicants wanting to enter for the Awards may submit entries at the SLAJ Headquarters on Campbell street in Freetown or via the regional offices of SLAJ in Makeni, Kenema and Bo.

Entries can also be electronically submitted to SLAJ via emailslajgoldenjubileeawards2021@gmail.com. All submissions must be received on or before 5:00 PM, on Wednesday, 31st March, 2021.

Newspaper, magazine articles, online publications, radio and TV programmes published or aired between 1st May 2019 and 31st March, 2021 are eligible.

All entries MUST be original. All submissions must be accompanied by the following information – clearly indicated and submitted on a separate piece of paper: Name, Contact information – phone, e-mail address, etc., One Passport sized picture, Media house – where published/aired and date published and Category entered.

All entries must be clearly labeled or submission will be disqualified.

A panel of independent judges will review all entries and submit report to the SLAJ Golden Jubilee National Media Awards Committee. To sponsor any category/categories, or the Golden Jubilee awards in general, please call: 076 470288/030 470288/076 445300 or email: slaj.salone@gmail.com.
