The management of the Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation (SLRTC), in collaboration with relevant authorities, has launched an investigation into a fire outbreak that destroyed several buses at its compound on Friday night, June 5, 2026.
The incident occurred at about 11:00 p.m., prompting immediate response and follow-up actions by the Sierra Leone Police, the National Fire Force, and the National Disaster Management Agency to determine the cause and assess the extent of damage.
Speaking on the incident, Mahmoud Kamara, Head of Procurement at the Sierra Leone Public Transport Authority, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to establish what triggered the blaze.
He described the incident as a major loss, noting that “this is our livelihood that has been engulfed by fire.”
Mr. Kamara explained that five provincial buses were affected, four of which were operational while one was out of service at the time. He added that the buses had been in service for over 11 years.
Authorities say the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, as investigations continue.
The RTC management has assured the public of full cooperation with investigative teams, with findings expected to guide future safety and asset protection measures within the public transport system.
