The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has suspended a motion aimed at establishing a parliamentary committee to investigate National Elections Watch (NEW), citing the sensitivity of the issue and the need for “proper judgment.”
The motion, introduced by Hon. Sellu, raised concerns about NEW’s credibility following a statement from the Office of National Security that distanced itself from the organization’s 2023 election report. Sellu also highlighted allegations from several civil society groups regarding potential financial irregularities within NEW.
Hon. Ambrose Lebbie, who seconded the motion, questioned the organization’s reported membership, claiming that while NEW asserts representation of over 400 civil society groups, actual engagement appears limited to fewer than 50. He emphasized the public’s right to transparency regarding the organization’s funding sources.
However, Hon. Mohamed Bangura urged Parliament to exercise caution, proposing a closed-door meeting to address discrepancies in the claims made by both the mover and seconder before taking any further action.
Although the motion was formally passed by the House, the establishment of the investigative committee has been put on hold, reflecting a careful approach by Parliament in handling matters that touch on civil society oversight and electoral integrity.
Parliamentarians indicated that further deliberations will focus on ensuring due process and accurate information before proceeding with any formal inquiry into NEW.
