The Communications Directorate at State House has disclosed that President Julius Maada Bio has formally invited leaders of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party to engage in dialogue aimed at promoting peace and easing political tensions, but the party has yet to respond positively.
Director of Communications, Myk Berewa, revealed that the invitation was extended last week as part of the presidency’s efforts to address concerns raised by the opposition and encourage constructive engagement between the two sides.
“In the interest of promoting peace, the President has invited APC leaders to present their concerns. However, they appear to be delaying their response and maintaining a boycott rather than engaging in dialogue,” Berewa stated.
According to State House, the proposed meeting is intended to create a platform for open discussion and help reduce rising political tensions, with government maintaining that dialogue remains the most effective means of resolving differences among political stakeholders.
The development comes amid an ongoing boycott by APC Members of Parliament, who have withdrawn from legislative and governance processes over concerns surrounding the appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner. The opposition insists that he should not oversee the 2028 general elections.
Despite the invitation, the APC leadership has not formally accepted the offer, and their absence from the proposed talks is being viewed by State House as reluctance to engage. The Party had not issued an official response at the time of publication.
Political analysts note that sustained dialogue between the government and opposition is crucial to maintaining national stability, particularly during periods of heightened political disagreement. Attention now turns to whether the APC will reconsider its stance and participate in the proposed engagement.
