The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has successfully hosted its three-day Culture and Creativity Weekend Getaway at the stunning Sulima Beach, drawing national attention to one of Sierra Leone’s most breathtaking and underexplored coastal destinations. The initiative forms part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to promote domestic tourism, stimulate local economies, and position diverse destinations across the country on the global tourism map. The Ministry’s agencies, including the National Tourist Board (NTB) and the Monuments and Relics Commission (MRC), alongside other sector partners, were all present in Sulima, reinforcing a unified national approach to tourism development.

The official opening was led by the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, who described Sulimaas more than just a gateway near the Liberian border. Against a backdrop of over 40 kilometers of golden sand and rolling Atlantic waves, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to showcasing unique destinations while encouraging investment in hospitality infrastructure, including guest houses, hotels, and marine transport services. Her message was clear: tourism development is a shared national responsibility.
Across the first two days, Sulima transformed into a vibrant stage of culture, creativity, and community spirit. Activities ranged from relaxed community interactions and ease-off moments along the beachfront to electrifying live performances and captivating showcases by the Sierra Leone National Dance Troupe, the Sierra Leone Acrobat, and the Reggae Union. Sierra Leone’s rich gastronomy was also strongly showcased, offering guests an authentic taste of local cuisine and reinforcing the country’s culinary appeal as part of the tourism experience.
The wellness dimension of the getaway was highlighted through a refreshing beachside yoga session promoting balance, relaxation, and healthy living as integral components of destination experiences. Community engagement remained central, including a spirited friendly football match between Ministry staff and Sulima’s “Sand Boys.” The evening atmosphere came alive with vibrant performances from Star Zee, Amie Kallon, Speedo, Bobby, Apreel, and other dynamic acts, keeping the celebration of culture and creativity in full motion.
The Culture and Creativity Weekend ultimately demonstrated the transformative potential of culture-led tourism. By investing in local creatives, engaging communities, and spotlighting Sulima’s natural beauty, the Ministry reinforced Sierra Leone’s identity as a destination rich in authenticity and opportunity. Beyond celebration, the event delivered a strong message of resilience, inclusivity, and sustainable growth for the nation’s tourism sector.
