Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, has departed Freetown to participate in the Global Coalition Summit, “Fostering the Future Together,” taking place at the White House on the invitation of Melania Trump, First Lady of the United States of America.
Ahead of the high-level gathering, Dr. Bio underscored her commitment to representing Africa and advocating for the protection and well-being of children in an increasingly digital world. She noted that while technology continues to open doors for education and innovation, it also presents growing risks that must be addressed collectively.
“I am profoundly pleased to stand as a voice for Africa—representing not only our continent, but the millions of children whose futures depend on the choices we make today,” she said.
The First Lady emphasised that children today are navigating digital environments that can both empower and expose them to harm, calling on global leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to prioritise child safety and responsible digital practices.
Dr. Bio also expressed appreciation to Melania Trumpfor the opportunity to serve as Africa’s voice within the coalition, describing the gesture as a reflection of strong international cooperation and shared responsibility.
She further highlighted the importance of collaboration among African First Ladies and global partners to build systems that educate, protect, and empower children, ensuring they become safe and responsible digital citizens.
The summit is expected to bring together world leaders and advocates to advance discussions on child protection, ethical digital standards, and international cooperation in safeguarding young people in the digital age.
Dr. Bio described her participation as a “moment of purpose,” reaffirming her commitment to championing policies and partnerships that will secure a safer digital future for children in Africa and around the world.
