President Bio Cancels Top Diplomatic Trip

The Minister of Foreign Afairs and International Cooperation, Professor David Francis has confimed that President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has cancelled his participation in the Extraordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of States and Government on the Political situations in the Republics of Guinea and Mali.

The Session was scheduled for yesterday Sunday 7th November 2021 in Accra, Ghana. The cancellation is due to the fire disaster that occured in Wellington, Freetown on Friday, 5th November, 2021.

The fire disaster led to the loss of lives, wounding and bodily burns and loss of propertied on a large scale. The Foreign Minister described the situation as another National Disaster.

Following the devastating tragedy of the fuel tanker explosion in Wellington, PMB, His Excellency Julius cancelled his ECOWAS trip.

Expressing his condolences following the tragedy, H.E Julius Maada Bio stated: “Deeply disturbed by the tragic fires and the horrendous loss of life around the Wellington PMB area. My profound sympathies with families who have lost loved ones and those who have been maimed as a result. My Government will do everything to support affected families.”

It could be recalled that H.E Julius Maada Bio was initially scheduled to return to Sierra Leone on Sunday 7th November 2021 after the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow and the Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Accra.

H.E President Bio returned to Sierra Leone in Saturday 6th November 2021.
