Sixteen coastal communities across the Western Area Urban and Rural districts are preparing to take part in the upcoming Coastal Unity Boat Race, an initiative aimed at blending sport, culture, and tourism development in Sierra Leone.
Scheduled for April 4–5, 2026, the race forms part of activities under the national Year of Culture and Creativity. Beyond the competition, organizers say the event will spotlight the rich maritime traditions of coastal communities while drawing attention to the environmental and economic challenges they face.
The event, organised by the GEED Foundation with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Sierra Leone, Rokel Commercial Bank, and Africell, seeks to formalize boat racing as a viable tourism attraction while strengthening unity and youth participation within coastal communities.
Communities including Government Wharf, Kissy Ferry Terminal, Susan’s Bay, Congo Town, Moa Wharf, Tombo, Aberdeen, King Jimmy, Funkia, Levuma, No. 2 River, Lakka, Magazine, Kroo Bay, and Banana Water have already confirmed their participation, marking a strong turnout for the maiden edition of the event.
Cash prizes have been announced for top-performing teams, with the winners set to receive NLe50,000, while second and third place teams will take home NLe40,000 and NLe30,000 respectively. Additional awards will recognise creativity, including prizes for the most outstanding team flags, to be presented by NabeelaFarida Tunis.
Organisers believe the initiative will not only celebrate heritage and community spirit but also position Sierra Leone’s coastline as a vibrant hub for cultural tourism and local innovation.
