Water Resources Minister engages Moroccan counterpart on several projects

On the margins of the 14th Ordinary Session of the General Assembly of the African Ministers’ Council  on water held in Dakar, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Sao-Kpato Hannah Max-Kyne on Monday 29th September, 2025 held fruitful bilateral engagement with the Minister of Equipment and Water of the Kingdom of Morocco, Mr Nazir Baraka. 

Drawing from the strong bilateral relationship that exists between the two countries, Mr. Baraka disclosed  that they were ready to collaborate with the Ministry of Water Resources in the areas of dam construction, water highway distribution network, Integrated Water Resources Management,  waste water conversion, as well as research, innovation and capacity building. 

He further disclosed that with their expertise in construction and operations of desalination plants powered by renewable energy, they were willing to provide guidance and support for replication in Sierra Leone through Public Private Partnerships.

In her response, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr Sao-Kpato Hannah Max-Kyne, alluded that the areas of intervention outlined by her colleague aligned with the Medium Term National Development Plan, 2024 – 2030 as well as the WASH Development Programme 2025 – 2035. She emphasized the need to collaborate to explore the possibility of installing and operating desalination plants to address the water supply challenges. 

She also informed her colleague that the Sanitation component was added to her ministry two years ago and that the aspect of liquid waste management was very critical to improve on sanitation and service delivery. 

A consensus was reached by both ministers for the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding to guide ongoing engagements.
