At a packed and newly built multi-purpose hall in Koakoyima, Koidu City in Kono on Saturday night, September 4th, the Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh gave Wongor Investment and Mining Corporation a distinguished award for its Corporate Social Responsibility towards the district football team, the Diamond Stars of Kono.
Mr. Murtada Tunis, the Country Manager for Wongor Mining, made an additional pledge of 50 million leones in assistance towards the team.
In 2021 alone, Wongor Mining has provided two separate medical assistance programs in its host communities. The first was in April this year which involved Chinese medical doctors and the second was in July, in which the District Health Management Team were brought in by the company to assist the local people medically. People were treated for infectious diseases, malaria, typhoid, high blood pressure, as well as pregnant and lactating mothers.
Wongor mining is currently constructing a Community Health Clinic in Nimikoro Chiefdom for the benefit of its host communities.
When school pupils in its host communities were about to sit to the NPSE exams, Wongor mining provided food and transportation for over 100 students to and from their exam centers.
“Our investment in human capital initiatives as a company for people in our host communities is in line with President Bio’s vision to uplift every human resource that we possibly can,” said the Country Manager, Mr. Tunis. “We continue to enjoy a great relationship with our communities because of our responsiveness to most of their needs and demands,” he added. “We cannot rule out that there are no challenges but our management approach in handling our challenges have gained lots of admiration from the communities,” the Manager concluded.
Wongor Mining is the largest gold mining company in Sierra Leone and the only gold mining company with a state-of-the-art processing plant. When asked what makes your company different, Mr. Tunis responded that “our value addition proposition as evident in a multi million dollar processing plant is what makes us distinct because it means more revenue and taxes for government and more development funds for the communities.”
Wongor mining has been operating only for 2 years but they remain one of the admired large scale mining companies in Sierra Leone.
