According to Lambert the deployment of the short term observers is the next stage of their elections mission as the people of Sierra Leone want to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice in a peaceful and safe election, free from intimidation.
“We will like to call on all political parties, their leaders, supporters together with the government and police to ensure that this can happen so that there will be a peaceful democratic transfer of power through the ballot box from the outgoing to the incoming president,” Lambert said during the press briefing.
She added that the two candidates for the presidency must tolerate themselves and conduct themselves in a manner befitting the honor of that role, adding that election day is a special day for any country and in Sierra Leone all citizens whether from the east, west north or south have vote of equal value and will together elect a president of their choice.
“The constitutional responsibilities of conducting the elections rests with the National Electoral Commission (NEC) which has already overcome many challenges in this election,” Lambert said.
Members of Sierra Leone civil society organizations and international observer missions according to Lambert have described the March 7th multi-tier elections as largely credible and peaceful as voters were allowed to demonstrate their democratic in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. She added that they trust NEC will be able to fulfill its responsibilities under the law with support from the police so that the will of the people to elect their new president will be upheld as soon as possible.
