According to the survey findings, seven in ten Sierra Leoneans indicated that citizens should be able to hold government accountable even if it makes decision very slow.

In his submission, Minister Swaray said because 70% of Sierra Leoneans from the survey were yearning for democratic accountability, they cannot turn the other way round as a democratically elected government.

“We campaign on the platform of enhancing democratic accountability and we have demonstrated it thus far since we took over the reign of governance. We encourage all citizens to enjoin us in this long journey to have a new Sierra Leone,” he said.

He noted that in their quest to deepening accountability and democratic transparency, three statutory instruments were passed in parliament to institute various commissions of enquiry.

He said they were in advance stages now for the setting up of the commissions and called on all stakeholders to support it because it is a clarion call from citizens as they yearned for democratic accountability.

He spoke about their readiness and determination to go every inch of the way to ensure that citizens get what they wanted and assured of their commitment to do more to grant more freedom to Sierra Leoneans across the divide to join political parties of their choice and take position on issues they desire.

“We will not campaign but we will deliver for Sierra Leone and allow the people to decide,” he added.

This is the seventh round of the Afro Barometer survey findings but the third on Sierra Leone specifically with the first coming in 2012.
