It could be recalled that on Monday 3rd June, 2019, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) declared Mr. Deveaux wanted and placed a Le5,000,000 (five million Leones) bounty for information leading to his arrest.

Hours after this declaration was made at a press conference held at Police Headquarters at George Street in Freetown in the evening of 3rd June, 2019, rumors began doing the rounds that Deveaux had fled to the US Embassy in Freetown to seek asylum.

On the contrary however, a US Embassy official on Tuesday 4th June, 2019 (which was the Eid Mubarak holiday) called AYV to state that the US Embassy does not interfere or meddle in the internal politics of any country or government, citing that they are a diplomatic mission which a mandate to support development initiatives without interfering in the internal politics or affairs of any nation, and that at no time, within the past few days did the US Embassy entertain any Sierra Leonean seeking political asylum or refuge; emphasizing that the US mandate in Sierra Leone is purely diplomatic.
