The event which was held at the Africell headquarter in Wilberforce, Freetown was geared towards celebrating the 243rd Independence Anniversary of the United States of America.

In another development Africell launched 3,000 Leones for 30 minutes international call to the United States of America valid for twenty four hours.

Head of Corporate Affairs, Joe Abass Bangura said the USA was once a colony and fought for the right to determine its own fate. “From a struggling nation of about 2.5 million people in 1776, the USA has grown to become unarguably the most powerful nation on the face of earth,” he said.

He added that the USA population of more than 300 million is composed of an estimated number of over 43 million foreign originating from every continent in the world.

The USA Census Bureau figures for 2017, show that 38,257 of foreign-born nationals in the USA are Sierra Leoneans; adding that remittances repatriated to Sierra Leone from Sierra Leoneans in the USA in 2017 was estimated at $12.1 million, according to Mr. Bangura.

“Apart from the fact that Africell is owned by American citizens, the company’s relationship with the US Embassy in Freetown goes back since the founding of the company some 15 years-ago,” he noted.

He went on to say that Africell partnered with the Embassy in 2103 to launch the Africell American Corner, the most outstanding of American spaces in the country.

Winner of the return air ticket Mohamed Barrie commended Africell for the opportunity. According to him, he has been longing to see his elder sister who is living in the USA.

According to Mr. Barrie he has been informing people and giving them confidence about the realities of Africell, cited that he started working for Africell in 2018.

“Before joining Africell, I had been working as a sand miner in Hamilton and I later joined Africell as a Sales Rider when I got the information about Africell needing bike riders. I applied and was successful,” Barrie informed his audience.
