In 2009, mapping of the five targeted diseases was completed. Then, in 2010, the NTD program achieved 100% geographic coverage for targeted endemic diseases in 2010, reaching over 80% of the target population.
Since then, the National NTD Program has made key achievements to date; with over 5 million clients receiving annual treatments; Assessment Surveys after five rounds of mass drug administration showed significant reductions in onchocerciasis prevalence in the 12 endemic provincial districts; Assessment Surveys also showed a drastic reduction of schistosomiasis from 45.1% in 2009 to 11.9% in 2016 and eight out of 12 health districts have qualified for Assessment Surveys for lymphatic filariasis in 2017.
These indicators show that Sierra Leone is on track to eliminate and/or control NTDs. The United States Government, through USAID, congratulates the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Helen Keller International and partners on these successes and thanks the American people for their support to the NTD program.
