Of 1,919 detained inmates at the Male Correctional Centre on Pademba Road in Freetown, authorities said 1,868 inmates escaped during the prison break on Sunday 27th November, 2023.

The authorities said about 24 of the escaped inmates have been rearrested and taken back for detention, adding that some other escapees have called to say they want to return to detention.

In a similar development, acting on intelligence, the Waterloo Police Division in the Western Area Rural District also rearrested close to 12 escapee male inmates.

Amongst the arrested inmates are those standing trial for Murder and other Felonious criminal offenses. The police said several checkpoints have been mounted and manned by joint security (military and police) personnel to ensure more escapees are rearrested and calm returns to the country.
