The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Government of Nigeria have sent a high powered delegation to Sierra Leone following Sunday’s attack.
On X, Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Information and Civic Education, confirmed that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Musa Kabba was at the Freetown International Airport in Lungi to receive the delegation.
In a strongly worded press statement released yesterday, ECOWAS condemned the recent attack on Wilberforce Barracks, denouncing the resulting disturbance of peace and democracy in Sierra Leone.
The regional body emphasised the urgent need for decisive action against the perpetrators.
Minister Timothy Kabba, in a series of posts on X, expressed his unwavering commitment to upholding democracy in Sierra Leone.
He stated: “Sunday’s resistance against the unconstitutional attempt to usurp the people’s power represented the truest strength of our Democracy—a nation of tenacity and resilience. We will not give up! Our shared responsibility to protect and build a better Sierra Leone still lives on.”
Highlighting the collective efforts to thwart the mutiny, Kabba acknowledged the crucial role played by the country’s armed forces under the command of President Bio. He also lauded the solidarity shown by ECOWAS and the Mano River Union (MRU) member states.
As Sierra Leone navigates these challenging times, the high-powered ECOWAS delegation’s visit underscores the regional commitment to stability and democratic governance.
