Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio has delivered the Keynote Address for this academic year’s Matriculation Ceremony of the Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) at the university’s amphitheatre. She spoke under a theme of: “Inspiring the next Generation of Female Leaders”.

The event was well attended by an assembly of over 5,000 Students, Parents and University Faculty and Administrative Staff.

Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio’s keynote shared a deeply insightful and empowering message to the audience. Reflecting on her own journey as a student matriculating in London in the 90’s, she underscored the immense responsibility that accompanies university life.

Her Excellency’s encouragement for students to have faith and to strive for personal growth resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of self-belief in achieving success.

Drawing from her own university experience, she highlighted the critical role of focus and the need to resist distractions in order to excel academically.

Whilst rejecting societal stereotypes that limit success to males, she passionately argued for the potential of females to excel. She used her own journey as a compelling example of overcoming such barriers.

Reflecting on her tenure as the country’s First Lady since 2018 to date, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio outlined her commitment to advancing human capital development, particularly through addressing pressing issues such as sexual violence, early marriage of girls and the empowerment of females in society.

Her emphasis on the importance of self-respect, belief in one’s dreams and dedication to academic excellence served as powerful motivators for the audience.

In her closing, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to address the next generation of leaders. She thanked faculty members, the vice-chancellor and students for their support. At the end, it was clear from the applauding reactions that her keynote address has left a lasting impression, inspiring students to embrace their potential, pursue their dreams, and contribute positively to society.

Also addressing the gathering was the Vice Chancellor and Principal Professor Philip John Kanu who further highlighted the remarkable contributions of the First Lady and her husband, H.E. President Maada Bio, in elevating the institution to its current university status. He emphasized the significant renovations undertaken, including the rehabilitation of all buildings and the provision of furniture along with other generous donations.

To the new students, he extended a heartfelt welcome as they took the first step on their academic journey. He said it was a momentous occasion for them to officially become part of the MMTU family.

Furthermore, Professor Kanu opined to the university community that the government of Julius Maada Bio remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing the quality of services and lectures provided. He urged students to recognize the purpose of their presence at the university and encouraged them to maximize their academic pursuits.

“As we move forward, let us remain mindful of the dedication and support shown by our leaders towards the advancement of education. It is incumbent upon you as students, to seize the opportunities before you, and strive for excellence in all your endeavors. Together, let us continue to uphold the standards of academic achievement and contribute to the growth and success of Milton Margai Technical University” he emotionally stated.

Earlier, the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Alie Jalloh, joyfully extended a warm welcome to all and acknowledged First Lady Fatima Maada Bio as one of Sierra Leone’s distinguished academics.

The event ended on a high and positive note with much acclaim for the presence of the First Lady and her inspirational keynote address.
