Chief Agricultural Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (MAFS), Prof. Abdulai Y. Jalloh, visited Torma Bum to gain firsthand insights into the operations of the Regional Rice Value Chain Project and Rice Agro Industry Cluster, as well as other agricultural activities in the area.
Prior to his visit, Prof. Jalloh held a meeting with diverse agricultural stakeholders in Bo last month, focusing on aligning strategies for the successful implementation of the FEED SALONE initiative.
Impressed by the expansive and fertile land in Torma Bum, Prof. Jalloh described the location as a pivotal “rice production hub” for the county. He emphasized the importance of adhering to cultivation timelines for both the Rice Agro Industry Cluster and the Regional Rice Value Chain Project to ensure a successful harvest in alignment with the ongoing FEED SALONE implementation.
Prof. Jalloh stressed the significance of his visit as an eye-opener for all involved, urging stakeholders to recognize the immense potential of Torma Bum, especially considering completed soil survey studies.
He Expressed hope that Prof. Abdulai Y. Jalloh that noted the construction of the road to Torma Bum would not only increase accessibility for farmers but also serve as a catalyst for attracting direct private investment to the chiefdom.
During his visit, Prof. Jalloh was warmly received by Paramount Chief Alex Maada J.J Kiapumu of Bum chiefdom, Bonthe district, along with other key chiefdom stakeholders, fostering collaboration and community engagement.
With funding from the Islamic Development Bank, the Regional Value Chain Project has initiated cultivation on 1000 hectares of farmland in Torma Bum. Three agribusiness companies have been engaged to provide comprehensive services and collaborate with local farmers for a successful planting season.
To enhance market access for farmers, the Regional Value Chain Project has awarded a contract to Pavifort for the construction of a 15-meters road starting from Victoria to Manokoiganya.
This visit and the ongoing activities underscore the commitment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to bolstering rice value chain development in the country and ensuring the objectives of the FEED SALONE initiative are achieved.
