The city according to many residents was for many years termed as the most cleaned city in the country as a result of the hard work the former city council administration. They went on to say that the city started degenerating in terms of cleanliness as a result of the current council administration.
Currently, major streets within the Bo city are distended with garbage that had resulted to the stench of some part of the city. “The filth collection points particularly at the extreme ends of the city have transformed into a conducive residents for snakes, mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches and rodents” a situation that resulted to serious health problems in the city, Umaru Kakay stated.
In an interview with some market women at the Kandeh Town Market, Zainab Alpha stated that their market had been congested with flies and rats for the past two months, a situation she said resulted to the drastic reduction of their daily sale in the said market, as customers were currently refraining from purchasing food items from their market as a result of the invasion of flies and rats.
“Our current job is to scare away flies from our commodities instead of us doing business; most of our customers are no longer coming to buy from us, as a result of the flies.” Fatmata Kamara, a fish seller ascertained.
Responding to the numerous allegations in connection of the filthiness of Bo City, the Head of Bo Waste Management Department, Samuel Hinga Navo stated that his council had been working relentlessly to curtail the situation of grimes at the Bo City. According to him, one of the major reasons for the filthiness of the Bo City was as a result of the central government untimely and insufficient financial support to the council.
He went to say that most of their vehicles used for the garbage collection had been depreciated and that the council had no money to repair them at the moment.
“also we are unable to utilize the few good shape garbage collection vehicles, as a result of the fact that we do not have money to fuel the garbage collection vehicles” Hinga lamented.
Residents of Bo were however calling on the central government and the leadership of the Bo City Council to find immediate solution to the current situation of their city, before it will eventually transformed into a public health emergency situation.
