Two people have been quarantined at Makong village, Konikay Sanda chiefdom, Tonkolili district in Sierra Leone, following the death of a 32-year-old man infected with widespread Rash on his body, suspected to be Mpox case.

The country’s Public Health Agency says on August 20, 2024, the Kono District Surveillance Office was notified of a suspected Mpox case and members of the Rapid Response Team including the District Surveillance Officer, Clinicians and Laboratory Technician were dispatched to investigate the case.

The case presented with symptoms including Fever, Lesions, Red Raised Bumps, Pus-Filled Blisters, Muscle Pain, Headache, Joint Pain and Weakness, which started on the victim on August 12, 2024, after he returned from his farm.

The Rapid Response Team collected a sample from the case, and the case was evacuated to the Koidu Government Hospital Isolation Unit but the patient passed away the same day.

Samples have been collected for shipment, while preparation are being made for Isolation Unit and his two close contacts (mother-in-law and younger brother) have been quarantined.
