This year, Sierra Leone’s Port Authority has clinched the esteemed AWOL AMERICA Chairman’s Award, recognised as the most transformative institution for 2023.

This prestigious accolade celebrates remarkable individuals and institutions that have driven positive change over the past year. Under the visionary leadership of Director General Mr. Yankuba Askia Bio, the SLPHA has embarked on a series of revolutionary reforms, raising the bar within the West African maritime sector. Notably, they’ve rolled out innovative software for exit gate operations and enhanced inter-departmental coordination, significantly bolstering transparency and efficiency.

Additionally, the SLPHA is crafting and executing a robust Port Security Plan aligned with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. This initiative includes the installation of over 80 CCTV cameras to fortify surveillance, comprehensive training for 91 security personnel at the Sierra Leone Police Training College, and the launch of round-the-clock security patrols.

Such compliance goes beyond mere regulatory obligations; it is crucial for upholding the integrity and safety of global maritime operations. The port’s commendable observance of the ISPS Code, achieving a remarkable 89% pass rate in 2023, stands as a testament to the stringent standards established under this dynamic new leadership.

Additionally, the Port of Freetown has garnered impressive accolades, now standing 3rd in West Africa and 10th in Africa on the Container Port Performance Index. This achievement reflects strong leadership and strategic investments in port infrastructure and services, cementing Sierra Leone’s role as a significant player in African trade.

Remarkably, the Port of Freetown is celebrated as one of the safest ports in the world, often frequented by vessels from Britain, the U.S., Canada, and Mercy ships. The Authority now offers round-the-clock pilotage services, slashing vessel turnaround and cargo dwelling times from 1-2 weeks to under 48 hours.

By utilizing Ship-to-Shore (STS) and Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) technologies, they have significantly boosted the number of vessel calls.
