A 38-year-old woman, formerly residenced in Torkpombu village, Dama chiefdom, Kenema district, Kula Abu, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the High Court of Kenema.

Kula appeared before Hon. Justice Abubakarr Sannoh facing two count charges of Causing Grievous Bodily Harm. According to police reports, on April 12, 2024, she intentionally inflicted severe injuries on Abu Mambu, resulting in significant disfigurement.

She pleaded Guilty to the charges and requested leniency during sentencing.

In his ruling, Hon. Justice Abubakarr Sannoh acknowledged that Kula is a first-time offender and a mother of three young children.

Hon. Justice Sannoh said: “I understand that the convict is the wife of the victim and has three children, all still in their tender age.”

However, he also emphasised the seriousness of the crime and the lasting impact on the victim, whose injuries not only disfigured his face but also resulted in permanent blindness.

Considering these factors, Hon. Justice Sannoh sentenced Kula Abu to 15 years of imprisonment. She will serve her term at the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre in Kenema.

Abu was represented in court by defense counsels Patrick Kamara of the Legal Aid Board and Joseph Bandabla Dauda, while the prosecution was led by Andrew F. Kamara, a State and Customary Law Officer in the Kenema district.
