The Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Republic of Cape Verde have commenced issuing over two hundred laissez-faire passports to Sierra Leoneans in Mauritania who want to voluntarily return home.
With support from the Sierra Leone National Union in Mauritania, the process is taking place at ‘CANAL’ in Nouakchott, a community accessible to all Sierra Leoneans.
The Embassy of Sierra Leone in Senegal on May 22nd 2025, went to Mauritania to verify and register Sierra Leoneans in need of laissez – passers. This exercise was undertaken after the continued arrest and deportations of foreign nationals for lack of legal status in that country.
The embassy has had cause to repatriate and facilitate the repatriation of Sierra Leoneans -47 and 87 back home from Mauritania on two separate occasions.
During the embassy’s verification process, over five hundred were verified. The embassy is issuing out these laissez passesto those who want to voluntarily return home. Those already deported to the border town of Rosso have received theirs. The embassy is preparing the other sets of laissez- passers to be issued.
