Opposition Chief Whip representing the All People’s Congress (APC) in the Sierra Leone House of Parliament, Honourable Abdul Karim Kamara (AKK), has called on his colleague Members of Parliament to speak up and actively protect the country’s democracy through the ongoing constitutional review process.
Hon. Kamara made the call while addressing parliamentary colleagues, emphasising that the constitutional review presents a critical opportunity to strengthen democratic governance, safeguard fundamental rights, and ensure that the supreme law of the land truly reflects the will of the people.
According to the APC lawmaker, Parliament must rise above partisan interests and approach the review process with courage, integrity, and a genuine commitment to national interest.
“This is not the time for silence or political convenience. We must speak up and protect our democracy by ensuring that the constitutional review process is inclusive, transparent, and people-centered,” AKK stressed.
He warned that failure by legislators to engage constructively could result in reforms that weaken democratic institutions rather than strengthen them, noting that future generations would bear the consequences of any flawed constitutional amendments.
Hon. Kamara further urged civil society organisations, the media, and the general public to remain vigilant and participate meaningfully in the process, describing the constitution as a social contract that must not be altered without broad consultation.
Political analysts say AKK’s remarks reflect growing opposition concerns about the direction, pace, and inclusiveness of the constitutional review, as debates continue within and outside Parliament.
The constitutional review process is expected to culminate in key recommendations that could significantly shape Sierra Leone’s political and governance framework ahead of future elections.
