The International Organization for Migration (IOM) convened a capacity enhancement session aimed at strengthening institutions responsible for the sustainable reintegration of returned migrants. The workshop brought together participants from the National Youth Commission Sierra Leone and Freetown Polytechnic.
The training focused on building the skills and institutional readiness necessary to provide returned migrants with market-driven opportunities, guided by protection-centred and rights-based frameworks. According to organizers, sustainable reintegration can only be achieved when skills training is embedded within strong systems, delivered by competent and accountable partners, and aligned with national development priorities.
Participants engaged in interactive sessions designed to enhance coordination, technical capacity, and the delivery of services that promote long-term economic and social integration for returning migrants.
“IOM remains committed to strengthening institutional frameworks to ensure that returned migrants receive the support they need to rebuild their lives successfully,” a spokesperson said. “Together, we are building stronger institutions and sustainable futures in Sierra Leone.”
The workshop is part of broader efforts to equip local institutions with the tools, knowledge, and strategies required to respond effectively to migration challenges while fostering inclusive growth and development.
By focusing on skills-based reintegration anchored in rights and protection, IOM and its partners aim to ensure that returned migrants can contribute meaningfully to Sierra Leone’s social and economic landscape.
