Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio has officially appointed Mr. Edmond S. Alpha as the country’s Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The announcement was made over the weekend through a State House release in pursuant to Section 32(3) of the Constitution of Sierra Leon, 1991 (Act No. 6 of 1991). The development came after twelve of Sierra Leone’s fourteen registered political parties formally approved Mr. Alpha.
Press Secretary at State House, Yusuf Keketoma Sandi, said the President received official letters of approval from all twelve endorsing political parties.
According to Sandi, the parties that gave their consent include the Republic National Independent Party, United Democratic Movement, People’s Movement for Democratic Change, Revolutionary United Front Party, Citizens’ Democratic Party, Peace and Liberation Party, People’s Democratic Party, United National People’s Party, Sierra Leone People’s Party, National Grand Coalition, Alliance Democratic Party, and the National Democratic Alliance.
The endorsement marks a significant milestone in the consultation process outlined under the 1991 Constitution, which requires the President to consult with political parties before appointing members of the electoral commission.
While the majority backing signals broad political support for the nominee, attention now turns to the remaining two registered political parties whose positions have not yet been publicly disclosed.
The Electoral Commission plays a pivotal role in overseeing the conduct of national elections, making the appointment of its Chief Electoral Commissioner a matter of national importance. With preparations gradually shifting toward the 2028 general elections, stakeholders say consensus and confidence in the leadership of the ECSL will be critical to maintaining electoral credibility and public trust.
Further steps in the appointment process are expected in accordance with constitutional and parliamentary procedures.
