The All People’s Congress (APC) has intensified its stance on electoral governance, warning of a possible peaceful nationwide protest over the continued leadership of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as head of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL).
Speaking at a press conference in Freetown on March 18, 2026, the party’s Secretary General expressed strong reservations about the appointment, stating that the APC would not support what it described as a system lacking public confidence. However, the party also signaled openness to constructive engagement, emphasising its willingness to participate in dialogue conducted in good faith.
Mr. Alpha’s appointment by Julius Maada Bio was announced on February 20, 2026, under constitutional provisions, placing him at the helm of the country’s electoral body ahead of key political activities.
The development has triggered heightened political debate, with the opposition questioning the credibility of the electoral process under the new leadership. Analysts warn that the situation could further strain relations between major political actors if not carefully managed.
Observers continue to stress the importance of inclusive dialogue and transparency, noting that public trust in electoral institutions remains essential to maintaining stability and strengthening democracy in Sierra Leone.
