The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Sierra Leone, has launched “Rainbow City” as a bold step toward redefining Freetown’s image as a center for cultural tourism and creative innovation.
Located along the Hillside Bypass Road in the eastern part of the capital, the project transforms a once ordinary hillside settlement into a vibrant visual landmark, positioning it as a key attraction under the country’s 2026 Culture and Creativity Year.
The large-scale makeover features homes, rooftops, retaining walls, and stairways redesigned with striking geometric artwork in vivid colors, creating a unique fusion of urban life and contemporary artistic expression. The transformation is not only aesthetic but also strategic—aimed at boosting tourism and showcasing Sierra Leone’s creative potential on a global stage.
According to officials, the initiative was spearheaded by Nabeela Farida Tunis, whose vision helped translate an idea into a nationally significant project. Inspired by John Akinola and named by residents themselves, the development reflects strong community ownership and participation.
The artistic execution, led by Morrison Jusu, has turned the area into a colorful public space that now serves both as a community hub and a growing tourist site.
Authorities describe the unveiling as the beginning of a broader national movement to harness art, culture, and creativity as engines for economic growth, while inviting investors and development partners to support similar projects across the country.
