Pro-democracy activist Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrahhas called on the Sierra Leone Police to allow the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) to proceed with its proposed peaceful protest, while ensuring adequate security is provided to safeguard participants and the public.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with AYV, Marrahemphasized that the right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental democratic principle that must be protected. He noted that if the opposition believes protest is a more effective means of expressing its concerns, authorities should not obstruct the process but instead facilitate it within the confines of the law.
“If the opposition thinks protest can be more effective than dialogue, let the police allow them and provide them with the required security,” he stated.
Marrah further urged the security sector and the APC leadership to engage in constructive discussions ahead of any planned demonstration. According to him, such engagement would help establish clear guidelines and prevent potential unrest.
“The security sector should sit with the APC and map the style and areas of the protest, further agreeing on the rules of engagement,” he added.
His remarks come amid rising political tensions in Sierra Leone, with increasing calls from opposition supporters for public demonstrations over governance and electoral concerns. The APC has recently signaledits intention to stage a nationwide protest, a move that has sparked debate over public order, security preparedness, and the protection of civil liberties.
Observers say Marrah’s intervention highlights the need for a balanced approach that respects democratic freedoms while maintaining national stability. They argue that effective coordination between law enforcement and protest organizers could help prevent violence and ensure that any demonstrations remain peaceful.
The Sierra Leone Police have yet to issue an official response regarding the proposed protest. However, the institution has in the past emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order while respecting citizens’ constitutional rights.
