The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Abdul Kargbo, has urged Edmond Sylvester Alpha, Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) to resign, citing concerns over public confidence and the integrity of the electoral process.
Kargbo framed the issue as one with broader implications for national stability and democratic credibility, particularly as the country looks ahead to the 2028 general elections. He stressed that leadership of the electoral body must inspire trust across the political divide to ensure acceptance of election outcomes.
Kargbo argued that lingering controversies surrounding Alpha’s past could undermine confidence in the Commission’s work, regardless of its impartiality. According to him, public perception plays a critical role in electoral processes, warning that doubts about leadership could affect how future election results are received.
He further noted that President Julius Maada Bio, now in the latter phase of his administration, has a responsibility to safeguard his legacy by ensuring peace, unity, and credible democratic processes.
Referencing the 2023 elections, the opposition leader maintained that his party remains concerned about alleged irregularities and emphasized the need for reforms that would strengthen transparency and accountability within the electoral system.
Kargbo also underscored the importance of neutrality in electoral leadership, suggesting that individuals entrusted with such responsibilities should be free from controversy to avoid undermining public trust. He argued that, in some instances, stepping aside may be necessary to preserve national cohesion and confidence in democratic institutions.
The remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and debates over electoral governance in Sierra Leone, with stakeholders continuing to call for dialogue and reforms to reinforce the credibility of future elections.
