The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has reaffirmed its readiness to support political parties in conducting their lower-level elections, assuring all registered parties that the Commission will respond positively to requests for assistance in strengthening internal democratic processes.
Speaking exclusively to AYV on the Commission’s mandate, the Executive Secretary of the PPRC, Olushogo A. David, said the institution remains committed to ensuring that political parties conduct credible, transparent and peaceful internal elections in line with Sierra Leone’s democratic principles.
“Any request that comes from any political party will be honored by the PPRC, and if that request is for the PPRC to help conduct the party’s lower-level elections, then the PPRC will,” David declared.
He emphasised that the Commission’s commitment applies equally to all registered political parties, underscoring the PPRC’s role as an impartial regulatory body dedicated to promoting fairness, accountability and compliance with the country’s electoral and political party laws.
The assurance comes at a time when several political parties are expected to organise lower-level elections to elect constituency, district, regional and other grassroots executives ahead of future national political activities. Such internal elections often shape party leadership structures and influence preparations for national conventions and general elections.
The PPRC, established to regulate, monitor and supervise the activities of registered political parties, plays a critical role in ensuring that parties operate within the framework of the Constitution and the Political Parties Act. Beyond its regulatory responsibilities, the Commission also facilitates dialogue among political actors and promotes adherence to democratic norms and the rule of law.
David’s statement is expected to reassure political parties that require independent oversight or technical support in organising internal elections, particularly at the grassroots level where disputes over delegate selection and executive positions have occasionally emerged.
As political activities gradually intensify across the country, the PPRC’s renewed commitment signals its determination to work with all registered political parties in safeguarding democratic values and ensuring that internal elections are conducted in a manner that reflects transparency, fairness and respect for the rule of law.
