APC Deputy National Chairman aspirant, Comrade Leonard Balogun Koroma (Logus), has welcomed Parliament’s decision to establish an Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committee to monitor the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), describing it as a critical opportunity to strengthen electoral governance and restore public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.
In a statement issued yessterday, Koroma said the committee should not be regarded as a routine parliamentary exercise but as a significant step toward enhancing transparency, accountability, and professionalism within Sierra Leone’s electoral management system.
He noted that Parliament has both a constitutional and moral responsibility to ensure that the nation’s electoral process enjoys the trust and confidence of all Sierra Leoneans.
“As a party with a proud democratic tradition and a firm belief in constitutional governance, the APC welcomes every genuine initiative that enhances transparency, accountability, and professionalism within the country’s electoral management system,” Koroma stated.
According to him, the experiences of recent elections have underscored the need for stronger institutional oversight, greater transparency, and sustained engagement between Parliament and the ECSL.
He said the newly constituted committee has a responsibility to assess electoral preparedness, institutional capacity, legal compliance, stakeholder engagement, and public confidence in an objective and non-partisan manner.
Koroma also commended the Speaker of Parliament for appointing the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, as Chairman of the committee alongside the Leader of Government Business, describing the bipartisan arrangement as an opportunity to demonstrate that electoral reform is a national responsibility rather than a political contest.
He urged members of the committee to carry out their mandate with independence, courage, and commitment to the national interest.
The APC stalwart further stated that the development comes at a crucial time as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections, stressing the need to continue advocating for reforms that guarantee credible, transparent, and fair elections.
“Our objective is not merely to win elections but to ensure that every election is conducted in a manner whose outcome reflects the genuine will of the people,” he said.
Koroma argued that a strong, independent, and accountable Electoral Commission is essential for national stability, noting that credible elections help reduce political tensions, strengthen investor confidence, reinforce the rule of law, and deepen democratic governance.
He concluded by calling on members of the parliamentary committee to approach their assignment with patriotism, integrity, and a strong sense of national duty, adding that the committee’s success would ultimately be measured by the reforms it delivers and the public confidence it restores in Sierra Leone’s democratic process.
