The National Council of the Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) has declared that Alhaji Musa Tarawally remains an active member of the party, rejecting claims by four regional chairmen that he resigned from the CDP in 2018.

The declaration was made during a high-level executive meeting held in Bo city on Saturday, where the National Council unanimously endorsed a September 3 directive issued by the party’s National Secretary General confirming Tarawally’s continued membership.

According to the National Council, there is no official record of a resignation submitted by Tarawally and subsequently considered or ratified by the party’s appropriate organs.

The Council, which is described as the CDP’s second-highest decision-making body, said party records, including meeting minutes and attendance registers, indicate that Tarawally has continued to be recognized as a member of the party.

The development follows a September 18 statement issued by four regional chairmen, who claimed that Tarawally resigned from the CDP on June 15, 2018, to re-join the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

The chairmen reportedly said they personally witnessed the alleged transition.

However, the CDP National Council has rejected that position, saying the regional chairmen acted without the authorisation or required internal consultation of the party’s leadership.

The Council has consequently disavowed the September 18 statement, maintaining that no valid notice of resignation by Tarawally exists in the party’s official records.

The dispute has intensified following an action by the SLPP, which reportedly relied on the CDP Secretary General’s September 3 letter to direct Tarawally to stop presenting himself as an SLPP member or presidential flagbearer aspirant.

Tarawally, however, has disputed the CDP’s position. He maintains that he severed his ties with the party in 2018 and that he is a full member, delegate and financially compliant member of the SLPP.

His legal representatives have challenged the SLPP’s directive, citing his alleged 2018 departure from the CDP and relying, in part, on the position expressed by the regional chairmen.

The competing claims have now placed Tarawally’spolitical affiliation at the centre of an ongoing dispute involving the CDP and SLPP.

The CDP National Council has urged party members and the public to rely on official party communications regarding Tarawally’s membership status.

Representatives of the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) were present at the Bo city meeting as observers.
